The UMKC cross country team landed a smooth 9th place overall at the Bob Timmons Invitational Sept. 1 in Lawrence, Kan. Leading the girls in the 6K race were a pair of top-15 finishers, senior Jessica Scott in 7th place and senior Sara Hiller, who came in 12th.

Other finishers included Senior Laura Driver in 81st, sophomore Adriana Blakely in 84th, and sophomore Tiffany Teegarden in 102nd position. Running in the men's 8K was junior Jimmy Keown, who picked up 13th place as well as great esteem from his coach.

Head Coach Theo Hamilton exclaimed, "One of our kids, Jimmy Keown, I thought he ran really well; I even told him that after competition. He found that he could run with those guys."

Seniors Ryan Patrick in 74th place, Blake Koger in 76th place and Justin Simonich in 87th place followed Keown. Freshman Jay Devineni took 92nd, junior Daniel McKenzie had 128th and freshman Alex Lopez snatched 140th place. Hamilton explained why this meet was so important for the squad's season.

"It gives our kids an opportunity to find out where they are physically and mentally," Hamilton said. "You always keep that first meet so you can work towards your next couple of competitions."

How did Coach Hamilton think his team did at their first meet?

"From a Coach's perspective I thought we did very well but I'm going to say okay," Hamilton said. "We had several individuals who ran real well. I was disappointed in a few kids, but overall it was a good meet for us."

Hamilton said he is shooting for improvements between every meet and ultimately a conference championship.
