Here are some events happening around UMKC this week. From dance to music to modeling, there's something for everyone.

Thursday, Sept. 13

The Wylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Company will perform at 7 p.m.

The performance will feature a world premiere by Artistic Director Mary Pat Henry entitled "Sweet Otis Suite." It will be set to the vocals of Otis Redding.

"I don't think people realized how profound an artist he [Otis Redding] was," Henry said.

She explained even those who haven't gone to contemporary dance performance will enjoy watching the company.

"People who have never seen dance are usually swept up in the pieces we do," Henry said. "You will respect the dancers not only as artists but as athletes."

The performance will be in White Hall in the Performing Arts Center located at 4949 Cherry St. Tickets are $24, $18 and $15 for students. Tickets can be purchased by calling (816) 235-6222 or at www.wylliams-henry.org.

Saturday, Sept. 15

Bixby Lane, a Kansas City original band, will release their new CD "US." The release party will be at Bar Natasha, 1911 Main St., from 7-9 p.m. There will be a $10 cover that will get you into the party and get you a copy of the CD.

The band is made up of UMKC alum, John Wirst, Rick Willoughby, Guillano Mingucci and Jeremy Watson. Jeff Viets, Kansas City resident, is also a band member.

Profits from the event will go to Heifer International, which helps get medical and economic help to parts of Africa. The band will perform for the event.

Watson describes the music as "eclectic." On the Bixby Lane Web site, curious readers can access the band's music.

You can find out more about Bixby Lane at www.bixbylane.com.

Sunday, Sept. 16

The Patricia Stevens Model Agency model search is from 12-5 p.m. The search is for models with dress sizes 4-24 for an upcoming bridal fashion show at the Ararat Shrine Temple.

The bridal fashion show will be Sunday, Oct. 21 as part of a local Bridal Fair. Men and women are needed.

No modeling experience is needed.

Linda Brinkerhoff, the catering director for the Ararat Shrine Restaurant, is putting the event together. She wants people from all walks of life to try out for the model search.

"I want women who look like real women," Brinkerhoff said.

She also said there is no age limit for the models, as long as they are over 12.

"My goal is to get a grandma model," Brinkerhoff explained.

To pre-register for the model search call the Patricia Stevens Model Agency at (816) 221-0202 or (816) 221-1188. The model search will be held at the Ararat Shrine Temple at 5100 Ararat Drive.

Thanks for helping me get the word out, Jessie! Beauty comes in all sizes and all flavors, and we hope to find a diverse range of men and women with poise, who have a good attitude and want to try modeling for fun! We are building a 40' "T" runway just for our show, and the Fashion Show will be the highlight of our Bridal Fair Luncheon in October. (Continued…)
