U S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., was on the UMKC Hospital Hill campus primarily to talk about the proposed Federal Registry bill involving the pharmaceutical lobby that will be placed before the U.S. Senate in September. That issue was not the only one dangled before a throng of listeners.
Health care is not cheap. Fortunately, at the UMKC Student Health and Wellness center, vaccines and care cost the same amount for students as they do for the clinic. The center provides everything from immunizations to regular physical checkups. There are registered nurses and practitioners, a pharmacist and a health educator at the center to give students the care and assistance they need for a cheaper price.
The School of Computing and Engineering has a new leader this semester. Dr. Walter Rychlewski III will serve as interim dean while the search for a permanent dean continues. "My charge is to build a transition from the previous administration to the future administration," Rychlewski said.
If all goes according to plan, UMKC Chancellor Guy Bailey will need to start looking for a new home soon. In a referendum scheduled for Nov. 12-14, students will decide if they want to pay for a new $45-50 million Student Union, to be located on the property currently occupied by the chancellor's residence at 5106 Cherry St.
After the shooting at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech.), many colleges across the country reevaluated their resources for awareness and ability to reach troubled students. The Counseling Center at UMKC is no different. Marita Barkis, director of the Counseling Center, said UMKC has taken various measures to raise awareness among students and faculty.
The Office of Research Services, 5211 Rockhill Road, offers a variety of services to UMKC faculty and staff in the pursuit of funding research. Their mission is "[t]o provide support and leadership to faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students around their activities related to research and other creative arts," said Dr.
Students may complain about rising textbook prices, but may not be aware of all the contributing factors. The problem could be in the way professors place orders with the bookstore, according to Pete Eisentrager, assistant director of the UMKC Bookstores "It is literally costing you guys as students hundreds of thousands of dollars a year," he said.
Re-accreditation process underway Over the next two years, UMKC will conduct an internal institutional accreditation review. Issued by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, accreditation is tied to UMKC's participation in federal and state financial aid programs.
Aug. 24 11:35 a.m. Fraud - Officers responded to a report of a fraudulent credit card used to purchase a textbook at the UMKC Bookstore. 1:52 p.m. Injury - Officers responded to a report of a student having a seizure at the Performing Arts Center. The student was transported by MAST ambulance to the hospital for treatment.
