The University of Missouri-Kansas City women's softball squad came up short in battles fought against Wichita State at Cleveland Park on April 18, and a three-game series against the Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis (IUPUI) Jaguars over the weekend. The Shockers shut out the Kangaroos by identical scores of 8-0, then went to the Hoosier state and gave the Jaguars all they could handle despite the resulting defeats.
The Shockers sent senior Margo Pruis and junior Ashly Bright to the mound against the Roos. Each pitched flawlessly. Pruis threw in the opener and allowed UMKC just two hits while walking one and striking out five batters in the complete game shutout.
Bright matched her teammate then upped the ante, throwing a two-hit complete game shutout as well, but doubling Pruis' strikeout effort, whiffing 10 Kangaroos in the game.
Next up for UMKC was a weekend set with Mid-Continent Conference foe IUPUI. The series started slow for the Roos on Friday as they dropped the first game 11-1. Jaguar sophomore Breanna Howell gave up just one run in the contest, allowing five hits, walking three and striking out three more.
In the nightcap, UMKC pushed the Jaguars back to the walls in a hard-fought 5-4 loss to IUPUI. Homeruns by UMKC seniors Ashley Toft, her team-high seventh, and Jaclyn Schuyler, who sent her sixth out of the park, kept the game close.
Two runs scored by IUPUI in the seventh inning, however, was enough to seal the victory for the Jaguars.
UMKC senior Cori Mead threw well. She allowed three hits on three runs, while walking a pair and striking out a pair of hitters.
Sophomore Samantha Hurst threw 2 2/3 innings for the Kangaroos and kept the team in the mix for a victory, until IUPUI senior Sarah Needy smacked a two-out, two-run single into the outfield, which gave her squad a walk-off 5-4 victory. Hurst's numbers included allowing those two runs on four hits, allowing three free passes and striking out one Jaguar.
