Both the men's and women's golf teams are off to an excellent start this season. Last Wednesday, at the end of the Missouri Intercollegiate at Sunrise Beach, Mo., UMKC men's golf came out on top with an 883 (297-285-301); all of our players listed in the top 20. Women's golf also started the season with a kicker, boosting Rockhurst University with a tight 14-stroke lead at 324-338.

Michael Schnegelberger, sophomore, led the way for the men's team on Tuesday. He floated along by finishing two rounds at three under par, placing him in a six-stroke lead going into Wednesday, then faltered, with just four over par placing Schnegelberger in second for the match. Schnegelberger comes to UMKC from Drake University. This summer he tied for fourth place at the Kansas City, Mo., qualifier, earning him a first alternate slot for the U.S. Amateur.

The team clinched the victory at the Missouri Intercollegiate with a smooth nine strokes. Teammates Stephen Clark, junior, Adam Blue, freshman, and Kyle Mossfeld, junior, also placed in the top 20 for the competition. It is obvious that this team will continue to do well with such solid golfers in the association.

The men's golfers were not the only ones topping the field for UMKC this past week. The women's golf team went out and laid the course bare, swiftly striking Rockhurst. Junior Brittnay Hofer received medalist honors for her score of 78 on 18 holes, while freshman Jessica Fleming came in a quiet second at 79. Fleming comes to UMKC from Enid, Okla., and played in her first UMKC competition last week. She is no stranger to competition - she took third place in the 2005 U.S. Junior qualifier in Boise, Idaho.

UMKC golf is going to be a hot spot for competition this season with so many great players fighting for the top. Both teams have upcoming competitions. The women's golf team competes at the Nebraska Cold Stone/Chip-n-Club Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. The men's team plays at the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence, Kan. Both competitions start Sept. 18.
