The Mercury Association and the Student Film League (SFL) hosted a "Meet and Greet" event last Thursday in Haag Hall. Although everybody was welcomed to the meeting, mostly communication studies students and faculty were present. The organizations introduced the Communication Studies Department and events, and encouraged everybody to join their organization while enjoying free pizza and movie tickets.

The Mercury Association is a communication studies club and took its name from the Roman god of communication. The goal of the association is to educate the communication studies students, and any other students who are interested, and give them the opportunity to advance their skills.

"Once they graduate into their career market they have a job waiting for them," said Myeisha Greene, president of the association.

The Mercury Association brings together students from advertising, public relations, Web design and any other area of emphasis in the Communication Studies Department. Even students majoring in marketing, business, English or music can benefit from the experience offered by the Mercury Association.

One of the major events the Mercury Association hosts is the Internship Dinner. It provides a great opportunity for the students who are interested in the area to meet professionals from the industry. The media around Kansas City, such as Channel 41 News, the Kansas City Star, and radio stations HOT103 and FOX101, come to the dinner to look for UMKC interns.

"Definitely join the student organization; never leave college without an internship. No matter what your major is, get experience in the field before you graduate," said Greene.

The Student Film League is an organization meant to unite different academic and artistic disciplines around the campus to promote student films. The mission of SFL is to support student filmmakers by providing educational workshops, excursions to area film festivals and access to local filmmakers, access to a database of film-related organizations, and a collaborative community of fellow film and art students.

"Films require not just video but also sound, lighting, set design. Our hope and intent is to bring those that are in the theater department, in the fine arts, scoring together with the film makers in the campus to make higher quality productions," said Tom Lind, SFL president.

The SFL encourages students to get involved in the organization, help plan and organize events, and just to attend. SFL events are usually held in the spring. The fifth annual Student Media Showcase and second annual Oscar Party are two of the major events.

"We would like to try to get out to a film festival and have Student Film League support the KC Jubilee, one of our major local film festivals, by having co-sponsoring the event," said Lind. "Last year in [the] KC Jubilee Festival we had three or four UMKC projects won prizes."

Both the Mercury Association and the SFL are open to UMKC students. You can reach SFL at www.studetnfilmleague@yahoo.com, or can join their MySpace group at http://groups.myspace.communication studies/umkcsfl. Mercury Association has its own Web site at http://studo.umkc.edu/mercury. The contact address is http://studo.umkc.edu/mercury.
