Epperson House fire
Water cascaded down the steps of UMKC's Epperson House after a small fire was extinguished last Tuesday. The attic in the building caught on fire around 12:30 p.m. Construction workers who were welding touched off insulation in the attic, which caused the blaze. The building's sprinklers put the fire out, but caused excessive water damage to the building.
Junior Jerod Rivers was inside Epperson House when the fire started.
"We heard a professor scream that there was water pouring in from the ceiling," Rivers said. "We packed up valuables and when we opened the door we saw smoke coming down the hall."
Rivers said he did not hear the fire alarms until after he evacuated the building. He also thought the fire department's response to the scene was too slow. As a press time, the Kansas City Fire Department was unavailable for comment. The financial estimate of the water damage is unknown.
Epperson House, located at 5200 Cherry St., is home to the University's urban planning and design program. Classes scheduled in the building were postponed or moved until the building is cleaned up. Most of the water damaged faculty areas, but it also poured into the basement and ruined freshmen projects stored there. About three to six inches of water collected on the floor.

Syphilis rising in KC
Kansas City health officials are alarmed about rising numbers of syphilis cases recorded this year. The city will have at least 145 cases of the sexually transmitted disease reported by the end of this year. That number is more than five times the 28 syphilis cases reported in 2001. The numbers of reported syphilis cases have steadily risen in the past five years. In 2003, the number rose to 42, and 120 cases were reported in 2005. The actual number of people affected with the STD could be higher because some do not seek treatment. A free and confidential clinic at 2400 Troost Ave. is now being promoted.
