Men Dressing for fall

Paris and New York have spoken: wool is in.

Fall fashion for guys varies on many levels. From "prep" to "emo," it can be difficult to find the style that fits you best.

The good thing is that every style is in this season, but the most widely featured is what I call "suits meet wool with a twist of tie." Every part of the outfit - coat, pants, sweaters, ties (vests in some instances) - are 100 percent wool.

The first thing I see when I open the September/October issue of Men's Vogue is Ralph Lauren: suits, fedoras and wool - a nice, classic combination.

Every aspect of the clothing is wool, but what about your feet? Leather is great but scuffed leather is even better, a la Andy Warhol. Top it off with a pencil-thin tie, and you're good to go.

If you're looking for casual, preppy khakis and crew-neck sweaters are a good choice. But if you want to vintage it, wear letter sweaters that were popular in the 1950s and 1960s instead. Try finding one that doesn't have the letter of your high school but of your last name for a personal touch.

Solid colors from head to toe are an inspiring, simple design. Try a brown ribbed turtleneck with brown pinstripe dress slacks. The Gap designed their marketing around Audrey Hepburn with a black turtleneck, the "skinny" black pant and black "ballet" slippers for the ladies - the more vintage, the better.

The best for relaxing around campus would be a visit to 1992 with oversized, knit wool sweaters, corduroy slacks and a leather shoulder-strap tote.

When planning an outfit or looking for a stimulating design, think of my motto: "the body as art." If you've ever studied a painting by Matisse, Cézanne or Renoir, there are lines and colors that blend together, usually creating a bold impression. Think of a solid line from head to toe and try to keep the colors neutral to your surroundings, if at all possible. Some might call that a little vain, perhaps, but compliments will ensue when people notice you across the room because they're drawn to your artistic qualities.

In terms of color schemes this fall, it's slate gray with plum purple and forest green with camel khaki - try these colors if you don't feel like keeping it simple.

It's easy to look at hundreds of accessories and never know which one, if any, is best. Tip: you should own one black and one brown watch at all times. The same goes for your shoes and belts - especially if you travel often, you might never know what you need to bring. But if you have one of each, you'll never be at a loss.

I'm mostly preaching to the gay men's chorus with all of the new styles for fall, but for "metro" men, if you have the necessary shoes, watches and belts with you at all times, no matter what outfit you wear, you'll be safe - and your girlfriend undoubtedly will be impressed.
