The UMKC women's tennis team played against Creighton University on Saturday at the Overland Park Racquet Club. They lost 7-0, leaving the team with and 0-3 mark on the season. The team has lost every match this season by the same 7-0 mark.

This was the lone home match for the Roos, but the location seemed to have little to do with the outcome of the match.

In the one position doubles, Molli Boyd/Nora Bohumel of UMKC forfeited to Katie Chin/Jen Burge of Creighton. In two position doubles, Nicole Thurston/Lou Hurley (Creighton) defeated Anna Grodzinsky/Fallon Wicker, 8-0. The UMKC women's team does not currently have enough girls on the roster to have a three seed doubles team, so they were forced to forfeit the three position match.

After the loss at the three position and second position, there was no way UMKC could win the doubles point. With a player running late due to other school commitments, the team decided to forfeit the one position match.

In singles one position matches, Katie Chin defeated Nora Bohumel 6-1, 6-0. Two position player Jen Burge of Creighton defeated Molli Boyd, 8-0. In the number three position, Anna Grodzinsky (UMKC) lost to Nicole Thurston, 6-0, 6-0.

Number four position had the same outcome, with UMKC's Fallon Wicker losing to Creighton's Lou Hurley 6-0, 6-0. In the final match, at the six position, Jodi Yanagida, Creighton, defeated Katie Houlehan, 8-1.

While the start to the season has not been a good one for the Roos, the team is in its building stage. UMKC needs six players at the very least to be competitive. Currently, the Roos have six girls on the roster, but one cannot play until some time in April.

Another problem for the team is the imminent departure of several key players at the end of the year. At least three girls will be graduating, with one other girl almost out of eligible years.

Coach Brad Scott took over as head women's coach at the beginning of last semester. He has spent much time trying to build depth into his roster. Right now, it would seem his biggest priority should be recruitment.

Until a full roster is put together, the likelihood of this team being competitive is slim. The constant forfeiting of matches because no player is in the slot brings down the team.

While it is apparent the goals have been set to prepare for next season, the current team has done fairly well under the circumstances. Wicker is the only player likely to return, and all the girls continue to give a great effort.

The team will not play next week because of spring break, but they will return to play on March 11. UMKC will travel to play against Saint Louis that afternoon.
