The UMKC women's softball team opened their 2006 season last Friday night at the Arkansas Lady Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. In the first of five games the Kangaroos lost, 4-0, to Penn State University (PSU).
UMKC found itself with no one on base in the first inning. Taia Jones, junior, and Monica Canisales, sophomore, both struck out swinging, while Eryn Knecht, senior, grounded out to the pitcher.
In the bottom half of the first, it looked as if the Nittany Lions would score when a throwing error by Emily Dye, freshman, put Meghan Wolfer on third base; however, Dye worked herself out of the jam by striking out Hollee Haines to end the inning.
The second inning started as well as the first for UMKC, but with two outs Ashley Toft, junior, got on base with a bunt. Cori Mead, junior, followed with a single to right field and Toft advanced to third. Christie Sotelo, junior, then grounded out to third, leaving two on base.
In the bottom of the third inning, Jen Williams opened with a triple. When PSU tried a squeeze play, UMKC catcher Knecht was able to snag Jen Acunto's bunt and tag Williams. Later, Acunto opened the scoring for the Nittany Lions by crossing safely home on Ashley Esparza single. Haines grounded out to third baseman Canisales to end the inning with PSU up 1-0.
PSU added to their lead in the fifth inning, as Mead came in to relieve Dye. Williams got on base when Mead hit her with a pitch. Three stolen bases later, Williams notched a second run. The Nittany Lions doubled their lead in the sixth inning when Leigh Murray and Kari Lucas crossed home.
In the seventh inning, Sotelo grounded out to third and Cassie Wolf, senior, lined out to short stop. Jones ended the game with fly ball to right field. The game loss went to Dye.
For the second game of the tournament, the Kangaroos faced North Dakota State Saturday morning. Despite scoring two in the top of the first, the Kangaroos lost 4-2.
For UMKC, the first inning started with Jones hitting a ground ball to the pitcher for the first out. Sotelo got the offense started with a single to left field. Knecht hit a single to right field, advancing Sotelo to third. Knecht then stole second base and on a single by Taron Brewer, junior. Knecht and Sotelo both scored.
