Kalu Guasco, senior, also scored big with 14. Dee Ayuba, junior, and Tim Blackwell, sophomore, each had five rebounds. Blackwell also had seven assists. Day went to the board four times, while red-shirt freshman Brian Gettinger had three rebounds.
The game, which was the last home game of the season, got underway at Municipal Auditorium at 7 p.m.
Despite the tip going to Valpo, a lay-up by Guasco 35 seconds into the game, put the Kangaroos on the board, 2-0. A three-point counter shot came from Crusaders' Ron Howard, 2-3, but another lay-up by Guasco got the battle underway.
The score went back and forth, tying twice: first 5-5, then 6-6, with 17:13 on the clock.
At 15:41, Dan Oppland stole the ball for Valparaiso and put it into the hands of Ron Howard, who assisted a three-point shot by Ali Berdiel, bringing the score to 11-9.
Several missed shots by UMKC and several good shots from Valpo gave the Crusaders their biggest lead of the half, 24-11 at 11:20.
The Kangaroos didn't give up. Day put up two threes and Guasco had another lay-up before a jumper by Blackwell put his team within six, 23-29. The battle was still in full gear with shots going back and forth.
Another lay-up by Blackwell, a three by Day, a jumper by Guasco, then Day tied the score, 33-33, with another three at 4:25.
The Roos regained the lead and held on until a jumper by Valparaiso's Oppland put the Crusaders back on top and sent both teams into the locker room with Valpo ahead, 41-37.
In the second half three minutes and 15 seconds passed before Day sank a lay-up to make the score 39-45.
UMKC continued not to score and at 13:05, a lay-up by Oppland gave the Crusaders a 15-point lead over the Roos.
With 12:14 left in the game, something wonderful happened: the Roos started scoring again. Over the next five-and-a-half minutes shots from Day, Gettinger and Ayuba tied things up, 58-58, at 6:43.
