Attack was the name of the game Monday as the Roos tipped off against the Thunderbirds at Swinney Recreation Center. The game was the third of a four-game home stand for the Kangaroos.
Taunted by a five-game losing streak, the Kangaroos came out solid on defense but were not able to finish. The Roos found themselves trailing until 11 minutes left in the first half, when sophomore guard Brittny Picconi made the first three pointer of the game to put the team up 11-10. It was also the first three pointer shot by the Roos. The lead was short-lived, however, as SUU answered back with a jumper and two free-throws.
UMKC trailed until center Stephanie Brown, junior, made a lay-up with two minutes left in the half to tie the game at 24.
SUU's Cheryl Grant couldn't answer back and missed a lay-up. The Kangaroos took the lead again with 31 seconds on the clock in the first half, on a lay-up by center Liz Obrecht, senior.
The Kangaroos went into the locker room ahead by two but with a 34 field goal percentage.
UMKC used a strong performance in the second half to break open the game; the team emerged as victor, 69-54.
SUU came out of the locker room strong with two three pointers to take the lead once again, 27-30. SUU held onto that lead until UMKC jumped ahead with two free-throws by Brown. The game tied again.
In the final lead change, the Roos went on a 13-point run to put the team ahead 47-34. The streak ended with just less than nine minutes left to play.
The Kangaroos finished 41 percent from the field compared to 31 for Southern Utah, a huge jump from halftime. Turnovers were a factor in the victory as well. UMKC out-rebounded Southern Utah 44-34 and finished with eight steals to four for the Thunderbirds.
"I thought that everybody played well tonight," said Head Coach Bo Overton. "Our post players played well, we got our shooters shooting good. The biggest thing is attack."
