The University of Missouri-Kansas City is approaching one year without a dean in charge of its College of Arts and Sciences.
The hiring process may continue into next semester, as the formalities are just getting underway. Currently Dr. Karen Vorst is interim dean. She took the position after former interim dean Charles Wurrey resigned due to health problems.
Vorst is now assisted by Professor Emeritus Dale Neuman, who was recently appointed associate interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He first joined UMKC in 1966. In 1974 he became a full professor, and he officially retired in 2000, although he still taught sporadically.
The Dean's Search Committee met Friday, Feb. 10, to discuss the candidate search. The committee established candidate qualifications and decided on advertising for the position.
The group ultimately put together an advertisement for the position which will run in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Diversity Issues in Higher Education, and Hispanic Outlook. The magazines will run the ads beginning March 3.
Qualifications for the next dean of the College of Arts and Sciences include a doctorate in an Arts and Sciences field, administrative and teaching experience, and department chair experience.
Other qualifications include: "communication, mediation and collaboration skill, ability to manage resources, and substantial budgeting experience."
Budgeting is one of the most important requirements; the dean manages the budget for the entire College of Arts and Sciences. He or she will also "determine priorities for the commitment of resources."
The committee said it hopes to begin reviewing applications on March 20 and begin on-campus interviews in mid-April. The committee plans to continue interviewing until the middle of May. If the position is not filled by then, the dean search will halt during the summer and continue in September.
While committee members have focused on advertising the open position, they have also been looking at candidates already on campus. The committee has received nominations from the active faculty but will not disclose the names of those nominees.
Vorst and Neuman will continue their work until an official dean is chosen.
