Center for Creative Studies Lecture: Henry David Thoreau and the Challenge of Creating an Environmental Future, by James W. Sheppard, assistant professor of philosophy. Drawing on Thoreau's "Walden," this lecture will assert that an appropriate vision for the environmental future is possible only when the creative and ethical art of future visioning is fused with a scientific, informed appreciation of ecological limits. Stowers Institute Classroom, 1000 E. 50 St. 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Refreshments from 5-5:30 p.m.

Writer-In-Residence Stuart Dybek: 2006 Carolyn Benton Cockefair Chair in Continuing Education Series. Dybek, called by some a "Chicago writer," focuses many of his pieces on what he knows best: ethnic diversity. A second-generation Polish American, born and raised in the ethnic neighborhoods of Chicago's Southside, Dybek's work focuses on many of his childhood experiences.
