I can smell that coconut Tropicana suntan oil already.

Throw in some sun, sand and sky and you've got a picture of me relaxing.

I love spring break. It is the one time of year when you can really relax, because you know that summer is just around the corner.

Growing up, my family and I somehow always managed to hit the beaches of Florida for a week of fun. We'd leave early in the morning and by sunset, were resting by the pool, some of us (my parents) drinking pina coladas.

Unfortunately, as we get older, certain limitations don't allow us to take that trip every year. Work gets in the way, or like my situation in high school, you only get a four-day weekend.

Granted, this year I won't be making it to the Florida Keys as I had hoped; but I do know that a spot by my aunt's pool in Texas has my name on it. That is good enough for me.

But how can you make sure you will be safe from the evils of cold weather, or worse, unfinished homework due as soon as the break is over?

Here is a tip: get away and get your work done early. Sure, it sounds pretty logical, but even I need some motivation to meet all my deadlines.

If you are heading out of town, make sure your plans are made. If you are like me, you've had your plane tickets purchased for a few weeks now.

Also, make sure you know exactly where you are going and that it still is feasible to get there. Let me explain. In case some of you don't know, Cancun and most of the Gulf region has been damaged due to the hurricanes that ripped through last fall.

I have seen so many travel agencies on my drive home that advertise Cancun for $500, and I am curious as to who would want to go there when the people in those regions are still recovering.

In other words, make sure you're not being led to believe you are getting a bargain when you could end up taking a miserable trip.

You also do not have to shell out your entire life savings to enjoy a rest. Another tip: resting is free; you can easily rest at home in your own bed. Try to have fun as well - just don't make your trip more exhausting than your everyday life.

All in all, spring break is the pinnacle moment of the year for college students to get away from schoolwork and remind ourselves we are young and need to celebrate it.

Grab your friends, pack your bags and head out on the open road to enjoy life. You will be glad you did. Don't let this time in your life pass you by.

After all, spring break comes but once a year.
