Sammi Knapic put up nine points and recorded five assists despite UMKC's 87-65 loss to Oakland University.

The UMKC women's basketball team played a close game Monday night against visiting Chicago State University, but ultimately fell short by two points. They lost the game 55-57.

Forward Stephanie Brown, junior, was stellar underneath, earning 15 points and 12 rebounds. She went to the line nine times, hitting seven of those shots.

Sophomore Brittny Picconi also scored 15 points, six from three-point range. Picconi was 3-4 from the free-throw line, and handled the ball well with two assists and zero turnovers.

Sophomore Alysa Klein completes the list of players in double figures with 11 points. She did well with her shot selection, shooting 5-6 from the field.

The game itself was a back and forth effort, with the biggest lead only five points for Centenary. The game was tied nine times. Every time Centenary pulled ahead, UMKC fought right back.

Ultimately, turnovers did UMKC in. The Kangaroos turned the ball over five more times than their opponent, three in the first six minutes of the second half.

The 55-57 loss came after the previous week's loss to Centenary College on Jan. 28. A loss at home in conference play is not something the Roos are able to afford. The loss is even harder when the previous week's loss was to an abysmal team. The Kangaroos are only 2-2 at home this season.

The Roos traveled to Michigan to play Oakland University, hoping to bounce back from the home loss to Chicago State University. Any chance of a victory in Rochester was removed at tip off Saturday night. The Roos were never in the game. They lost by a final score of 87-65.

UMKC just had a bad start from which they were never able to recover. The first possession for the Roos resulted in a turnover, with the same result on the next possession.

With 5:20 remaining in the first half, the Kangaroos were already down by 23 points. They spent the last few minutes of the half on a 14-7 run, closing the half only down by 15 points.

The closest UMKC ever came to getting back in this game was 11 points toward the beginning of the second half, but it was to no avail. The lead eventually was 25 for Oakland with only 4:44 to play. The final 87-65 was close to the point differential for the entire game.
