The UMKC men's tennis team followed their loss at Drake University with a hard fought victory over Graceland University on Sunday, Feb. 6. The Roos began the game well by winning two of the three doubles matches to take the doubles point. No. 1 doubles team, juniors Richard Harrison and Joe Kane, won 9-7. UMKC's No. 3 team - senior Roberto Quintanilla and junior Darren Chiao - won 8-6.

Harrison and Grant Gelina, senior, each won their singles matches as well. After losses by juniors Jon and Justin Ghani, and Joe Kane in singles, the match was tied.

Roberto Quintanilla was left to finish the final match, determining the winner for the entire day's competition. He started out slowly but came back to win 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.

The next match for the Kangaroos was Feb. 10 in Wichita against Wichita State University. The Roos lost the match 6-1, but they were really outplayed. The two matches UMKC won, a singles and doubles, were due to injuries on the other team that forced the opponents to retire.

Last season, the Roos began on a five-game losing streak but performed well in conference play. This season's early win shows strength for the upcoming year. These early games are used to prepare the team for conference play, and with a win and two tough losses, they are readying for their conference opponents.

Women's tennis team point-less in opener

The UMKC women's tennis team dropped their first match of the season against Wichita State University last Friday, Feb. 10. The loss was across the board, with all of the singles players losing 6-0, 6-0. The doubles losses were hardly better; UMKC lost the No. 1 position match 8-1 and the No. 2 position 8-0.

The women's tennis team was projected to finish in last place this season, but the first match is not always a strong indicator of the upcoming year. The team did not win last year in conference play, so hopefully the team will learn from this loss. UMKC can take pointers from the Wichita State match and fix problems before the games really begin to count.

The next match for the Roos is Feb. 18 in Omaha, Neb. The match will be a neutral-site game against Wisconsin-Green Bay. Conference play begins for the Roos on April 13 against Oakland University.
