The UMKC men's basketball team barely won their two games this week against Chicago State University (CSU) and Oakland University to improve their record to 11-12 overall and 8-4 in the conference.

UMKC beat Chicago State, 82-81, on Monday night at Kemper Arena. The Kangaroos blew a 16-point lead late in the second half before pulling off the win in double overtime.

The Cougars got on the board first with a three pointer by Royce Parran. On the next possesion Dee Ayuba, junior, sank a lay-up bringing the score to 2-3. A jump shot by Ayuba put the Kangaroos up by one, but a dunk by CSUs' Kourtney Calvin brought the score to 5-4.

The teams continued to trade buckets, but at 14:31 with the score tied at nine, UMKC went on an 11-point run and took a 20-9 advantage.

Four players contributed to the run. Kalu Guasco, senior, scored four of his nine first half points. Dane Brumagin, freshman, sank a three, while Tim Blackwell, sophomore, rounded out the run with a jump shot.

A three pointer by Brian Gettinger, freshman, put the Kangaroos up by 12 points, but on the next possession a jumper by CSU's Michael Henderson brought the score to 20-30. On a three-point play by Blackwell, UMKC built their lead to a half high of 13 points going into the break, 33-20.

Another three started out the half for the Cougars, but a jumper and a tip-in by Guasco made the score 37-23. CSU answered back with a jump shot, but a lay-up by Jeremiah Hartsock, sophomore, put UMKC back up by 14 points.

The Roos maintained a double-digit advantage for much of the second half; their lead expanded to 16 points on two occasions. With 5:50 left on the clock, a three by Gettinger put the score at 61-45; however, the Cougars then began chipping away at the score.

Over the next two-and-a-half minutes CSU went on a 20-6 run to come within two points with 25 seconds left.

A pair of foul shots by Blackwell brings UMKC back up by four, but a dunk and a three sent the game into overtime, 70-70.

A lay-up and a foul shot by Guasco put the Roos up by three points but with a minute left, the Cougars' David Holston sank a three pointer to put the game into its second overtime.
