Free tax assistance available
It's tax season again. Whether you're a busy student or just a procrastinator, don't let the April 17 deadline to file individual tax returns sneak up on you. The University offers two free options to assist students with their taxes.
An H&R Block kiosk is located outside the bookstore in the University Center. A representative will be on hand from 11 a.m.to 2 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the kiosk to answer questions.
Volunteers are also available on campus to process taxes for individuals with incomes below $38,000. Tax preparation is from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday in the Law School and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in the Bloch School. Excluding April 6, the volunteers are available through the deadline.
Man convicted of kidnapping missing children
Neither the trial nor jury deliberations took long in the kidnapping case against Daniel Porter. Two years ago, Porter, 42, took his children, Sam and Lindsey, for a weekend visit and never returned them back to their mother, Tina. With a two-day trial and four-hour deliberation, Porter was found guilty of four counts of kidnapping last Thursday. He faces up to 38 years in prison.
Porter was already serving a 10-year sentence for an unrelated gun charge. Prosecutors hoped the stiff sentence would force Porter to reveal what happened to Sam and Lindsey, who were just 7 and 8 at the time.
Porter had been incredibly elusive about Sam and Lindsey's whereabouts. He told stories that the children were alive, dead, and even that he sold them. Porter said he took the children from his ex-wife to protect them from an abusive home. The high profile case received national attention when it was featured on "America's Most Wanted" and "Dr. Phil."
Former KC Star editor dies
The man credited with bringing major league baseball to Kansas City has died. Former Kansas City Star editor Joe McGruff died last Saturday from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called Lou Gehrig's disease.
