Turning things around for Democrats

Though many months away, election season is in full swing.

For supporters of the Democratic Party, what will it take to shake things up during this mid-term election year?

Fear is all we know. That is what we are taught. Speech after speech has done nothing but emphasize fear in the lives of every American.

Karl Rove recently gave a speech at the Republican National Committee in Washington stressing that this year's elections will address "security." Anyone who still has their head screwed on tight will see how things could go from there.

I am amazed when I turn on C-SPAN or any other cable news network and watch how left, right and sideways everything has gone to shame. I have decided our Constitution must not exist anymore, because it is continually being violated.

The president believes it is necessary to listen in on people's conversations in the name of "security," and Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez stands by in his defense. Anyone who knows how to follow the rules on a playground realizes such wire-tapping requires a court order.

If Bush believes it is necessary to listen in on "terrorists'" conversations, why can't he just follow the rules and ask for a court order? I am sure no one is going to object if Bush feels he has just cause for it and provides substantial evidence. I guess there is so much "fear" crammed in us we can't stand up and stop it.

What about Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's comments regarding Bush's announcement of an attempted terrorist attack on Library Tower (now US Bank Tower) in downtown L.A. in 2002.

Villaraigosa described the communication between his office and the White House as "nonexistent."

"I don't [necessarily] expect a call from the president - but somebody," said Villaraigosa after Bush's Thursday's press conference.

How ironic. Bush has difficulty communicating important details with the mayor of a city that almost endured another terrorist attack but allows wire-tapping without a court order.

These elections are prime opportunities for Democrats to stand up and prove, once and for all, that we're tired of having our rights violated. Also, we are tired of living in "fear" and endless false promises of "security."

Those of you who are still sitting by and being robbed of seemingly everything you value: isn't it time to stand up and prove that change really is in the air?

One person can make a difference, but no one person can do all of the work. Or have we become so numb to indifference that dissent no longer exists? Even Thomas Jefferson stressed that dissent was the highest form of patriotism.
