Starting Wednesday, Feb. 15 until Sunday evening, Feb. 26, the UMKC Conservatory of Music Dance Division will present four different performances of the annual senior recitals. All performances will be held in the Performing Arts Center's White Recital Hall, and are free of charge and open to the public.
Dance professor Sabrina Madison-Cannon coordinated this year's recitals. Madison-Cannon is a recent addition to the dance faculty, and this is her first opportunity to oversee the recitals.
"My job was to organize the shows and make sure the dancers felt prepared for their recitals," said Madison-Cannon. "I was the 'dancer behind the dancers', so to speak."
This year's recitals will feature the works of 14 senior dancers and six graduate students arranging lighting design.
Graduating seniors include: Desiree Leigh, Carinne Kimble, Kat Kimmitz, Alexandra Keys (performing Feb. 15); Anna Acker, Mariko Kumanomido, Maggie Osgood and Katie Thomann (Feb. 18); Michele Cox, Christina Mowrey and Andrea Ruch (Feb. 23); and Jessica Horvath, Cecily Oliver and Megan Reisenweber (Feb. 26).
"Each graduating dance student is expected to prepare two works for recital: one solo and one group choreographic piece....and they must perform in two different dance forms," said Madison-Cannon. "People do not realize how hard these dance students have to work."
Conservatory dance students are required to perform in student recitals as part of their degree program requirements. Dance students must also choreograph a faculty-approved composition to be performed in recital, one group piece and one solo piece.
The students additionally perform a faculty-approved recital solo, either choreographed by the student or by an approved choreographer. As described in the student handbook, the recital must consist of two different dance forms studied in the four years of coursework, including one solo and at least one work choreographed by the student.
