Monday night's 75-61 victory over Oakland was a good team effort. UMKC was down by one point at the half but rallied in the second half to a 14-point win.
The Roos started out slowly. They did not hit their first field goal until 16:12 was left in the half. By then, they were down by seven points.
A few minutes later, UMKC went on a 10-2 run to take a one-point lead. The teams spent the rest of the half trading baskets, and Oakland took the one-point lead into the half.
The first half ended with a small bit of controversy. With only a few seconds to play, Brittny Picconi took a dramatic three point shot. She missed the shot, but Coach Bo Overton was convinced she had been fouled. The fans in the stands agreed with Overton, but officials stood by the original call. The coach argued with officials but then decided it was going nowhere and went to the locker room.
The second half began very differently from the first. The first UMKC basket a lay-up by Liz Obrecht, came within the first minute of play.
The score went back and forth for a few minutes until the Roos went up by six points with 14:28 remaining. Oakland then took a time out, and came back with a 10-3 run to take the lead once again.
When UMKC took the lead with 8:42 left to play, however, they would never give it back. Blocking and rebounding the rest of the way, the Kangaroos were able to easily finish off Oakland with a final score of 75-61.
A conference home win was very important with the Mid-Continent tournament quickly approaching. Defensively, this team seems to be hitting their stride at the right time. They had 46 total rebounds, eight blocks and seven steals against Oakland on Monday night.
Stephanie Brown, Sammi Knapic and Leigh Mead each had double-digit points. Stephanie Brown not only had 21 points but was only one rebound away from a double-double. She shot 8-11 from the field and was 5-5 from the line.
Sammi Knapic was also a perfect 6-6 from the line on her way to 13 total points. She had five assists and two steals.
