The new facility has a modern looking 227,000 sq. ft. structure designed by Kansas City firm Clark Ennersen Architecture and awarded to the Walton Construction Company. Two wings connect to a main lobby and office space. The largest wing, adjacent to Holmes St., will have teaching classrooms and research laboratories for the School of Pharmacy.

The School of Nursing will be housed in the eastern smaller wing adjacent to Charlotte St.

"Our modern design is focused on accessibility to outdoor lighting," Simmons said. "Traditional square facilities, including our Dental School, don't offer much sunlight to students and faculty."

Currently nursing facilities are located at the temporary modular structure on the eastern hill. With the additional classrooms and teaching space, the Health Sciences Building will provide the additional capacity to double the current Nursing School enrollment to more than 600 students.

"Thanks to private donations, the nursing program recently purchased a $200,000 patient simulator called Meti-man," said Noemi Herrera Rojas, senior information specialist for Public Communications.

She said the teaching tool allows nursing students to monitor vital signs and diagnose patient symptoms.

Pharmacy students meet primarily at the Katz Pharmacy Building on the main Volker campus. The School of Pharmacy anticipates the additional research and laboratory facilities will boost enrollment to more than 400 students. Pharmacy scientists and associated researchers are scattered among the Spencer Chemistry Building, Katz, Hospital Hill, even at 4825 Troost.

"The new Health Sciences Building will provide a central facility for all pharmacy instruction and research," said Simmons.

Funding for its construction comes predominantly from Missouri state appropriations. The approximate $30 million was allocated in 1999 and 2000, but was not released to UMKC until 2002. Additional funding, each approximated, came from campus funds and private donations ($15 million), the Flarsheim Fund ($2 million), HRSA Grant ($1.5 million), and a HUD grant ($1 million).

Another fundraising project, entitled HSB Brick Campaign, is the current project for the Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy. The campaign gives graduates and friends of the schools the opportunity to leave their legacy in stone in the Donor Paver Area of the Medicinal Garden. The garden is located in the southern edge of the new Health Sciences Building.

The Katz Pharmacy Building is expected to be replaced by an additional facility for the biological and chemical sciences; however, dates and details remain to be announced.
