K-State students, faculty, community leaders, elected officials and military personnel from Fort Riley listened to Bush at 11 a.m. in Bramlage Coliseum. The address was part of a coordinated effort to defend Bush's domestic spying program from critics. Bush has come under criticism for authorizing intelligence officials to eavesdrop on international phone calls and e-mails of people within the United States without warrants.

Bush is the sixth president to give a Landon Lecture. Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon and George H.W. Bush all presented in the speaker series.

Burger King robbery suspect dies in fall

Kansas City police said the man who jumped to his death from a fifth-floor apartment window last Tuesday was identified as a robbery suspect.

Police arrived at the apartment of James E. Patterson, 42, just after 5 p.m. on Jan. 17. Patterson dove out the window of his apartment at 214 Armour Blvd. before officers stepped inside. Police believed Patterson tried to rob the Burger King off Troost at 1102 E. Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd. on Jan. 13.

A man tried to rob the Burger King just before 7 p.m. Friday, but employees could not open the registers. The robber was confronted by a man who told him to leave. The robber stabbed the man several times in the neck before fleeing. The victim needed nine stitches.

Dozens of TIPS Hotline calls prompted police to seek Patterson. Police believe Patterson intended to kill himself by jumping out the window. He landed on air conditioning units on a roof over the building's first floor.

New stadium roof could cost $200 million

The good news: a new rolling roof for the Kansas City Chiefs' Arrowhead Stadium could make Kansas City eligible to host a Super Bowl.

The bad news: such a roof could cost Jackson County taxpayers $200 million, in addition to $575 million already planned for renovations to Arrowhead and Kauffman Stadiums.

Officials for the project hope to pay for it through a mix of team money, state tax credits, and a local sales tax that could be added to the April 4 ballot by the end of this week.
