Junior Amy Lewis plays Kit Tyler.

"The challenge for me is not to make it too melodramatic," said Lewis. "Kids are much harsher critics and it's important to find a level of honesty that they'll buy."

Lewis also enjoys performing in such a challenging play that she grew up with.

"I first read this book when I was 11 or 12 years old and I remembered how it stuck with me," Lewis said. "The woman in the story is confused and trying to find her way in life, which I feel most women are. She arrives at a strange place and has to readjust to a totally different environment."

Church points out the significance of the story in modern society.

"In a time where we look at religion involved in church and state, I believe that this piece has contemporary relevance and provides much to think about when you see the play," Church said. "I'm very excited about it."

Lewis shares that excitement.

"We've been rehearsing for three weeks. We're ahead of schedule and very much prepared." Lewis said. "This whole experience has been very exciting."

UMKC alumni founded the Coterie Theatre. In 2004 the theatre was named "one of the five best theatres for young audiences in the U.S." by TIME magazine. The magazine described the Coterie's as "groundbreaking" and "one of the nation's most respected."
