The UMKC women's basketball team lost to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Saturday afternoon at Municipal Auditorium. The prize of third place in the Mid-Continent Conference hung in the balance as both teams got off to a slow start.

At 18:42 a jumper by Brittny Picconi, sophomore, assisted by Liz Obrecht, senior, put the Kangaroos on the board 2-0. A steal and a jumper by Jowan Ortega, junior, put the Roos up 4-0, but a seven-point run by the Jaguars made the score 7-4.

The score went back and forth, tying twice until IUPUI pulled ahead by eight points, 24-16, with four minutes of play left in the first half. A three pointer by Picconi and a layup by Alysa Klein, sophomore, narrowed the gap. Another three pointer by Leigh Mead, junior, tied the game at 24.

IUPUI led 28-25 at halftime.

The Jaguars started off the second half with a three, but UMKC answered right back with its own three by Picconi with the help of senior Sammi Knapic. A layup by Obrecht narrowed the gap to one, but IUPUI went on a six-point run to make the score 38-32.

UMKC came within one point at 10:25 with a layup by Ortega, but it was as close as the Roos would come.

Over the next six minutes baskets went back and forth and the score remained close, with the Jaguars leading by no more than six.

A made foul shot by Stephanie Brown, junior, finished off a three-point play with 7:11 left in the game. Those were the last points UMKC logged.

IUPUI finished the contest with 10 unanswered points and the win, 63-46.

Picconi led the Kangaroos with 17 points, hitting 5-of-14 from three-point range. Brown contributed nine points and 12 rebounds, five of the which were offense. Ortega scored eight points, three assists and two steals.

Klien had seven points, while Obrecht and Knapic each contributed six rebounds to the team's 40.

The Kangaroos return to action with a game against Oakland University. They play at 7 p.m. Monday night in Swinney Recreation Center.
