Vasudeva Ramaswamy was confirmed as the new Administrative Vice President and eagerly got to work immediately following the vote. Ramaswamy took over after former AVP Sharan Srinivas resigned due to his December graduation.
Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Mel Tyler was on hand with Vice Chancellor for Adminstration Rick Anderson to update SGA about Sodexho plans. Sodexho was awarded a new five-year contract amid much student protest.
Tyler said to the Senate, "We want to enroll you in starting a positive discussion about our dining services."
Tyler asked for four students to help interview an executive chef and general manager.
Sodexho's new contract officially starts Aug. 1, 2006, but Anderson said the campus will see changes sooner than that. Sodexho plans to renovate the existing look of the cafeteria over the spring and summer to be ready by fall semester 2006. The revamped cafeteria should be able to accept debit and credit cards. Anderson also said outside eateries like Einstein Bros., a bagel and coffee shop, were being explored for our campus.
Resolution W2006:1 was submitted in the meeting. The resolution seeks to lower supplemental fees and eliminate the automatic increases of these fees by any inflationary index. The student activity, University Center, Athletics Department, and physical activity fees have been set to increase automatically to cover inflation since 1985. The Senate believes the system is outdated and that it is within their power to reset some of the fees.
The majority of Senate voted against Resolution F2005:14 and it did not carry.
The resolution would have made the Senate formally apologize to two election director candidates who introduced themselves and sat through the nearly three-hour long Nov. 16 meeting in hopes of getting the position. The candidates ultimately found out they had both been turned down as the Senate decided to extend the deadline to find someone else they preferred. The majority of senators felt they did not act inappropriately.
