Though still in its early stages, the newly-formed UMKC Citizen Police Advisory Board promises to strengthen communication between the campus police department and the University. The board will discuss safety and security issues, make recommendations, and bring feedback from the community to the table.
UMKC Police Chief Scott Shelton expressed his desire for a cross-section of people to serve on the board. Though he initiated the board, Shelton said decision-making is up to those representing different University constituencies.
"This is your board," Shelton said.
To this end, roughly seven to 10 members on the board will represent different UMKC constituencies: students, faculty, staff, alumni, KCPD and a neighborhood representative.
Shelton did stress, however, that the board does not serve as a replacement for contact between the UMKC Police Department and the community. He said he still is available to speak to anyone with questions or concerns.
The student representative is Student Government Association (SGA) President Marcus Leach. Leach will look within SGA and also outside the governing organization for another student representative.
Ex-officio members, who will not have a vote on the board, are Police Chief Shelton and Patrol Division Commander Mike Bongartz.
Other board members and their constituency:
• Assistant Vice Chancellor Rick Anderson, who in his role oversees the police department, represents Administration and Finance
• Ed Hood, professor, law; and Peggy Ward-Smith, assistant professor, nursing, represent Faculy Senate.
• Manager for Alumni Affairs Dee Evans represents Alumni Relations.
• Sociology and criminal justice professor Wayne Lucas represents the Provost/Dean's Council.
• Conference Assistant Heather Swanson represents the Staff Council.
Board members present liked the idea of a Kansas City Police Department representative, specifically one patrolling the neighborhood around UMKC. Shelton contacted officers to serve on the board: 49/63 neighborhood CAN Officers Aaron Shillcut and Pat Foster.
