UMKC, Tokyo research featured in journal

An international collaboration between UMKC and the University of Tokyo produced work that was published in Science magazine Jan. 13.

UMKC post-doctoral fellow Jun Chen and professor Wai-Yim Ching co-authored a research paper with University of Tokyo post-doctoral fellow James Buban.

Their research focused on the determination of micro structures in an industrial material called alumina oxide. The paper shows the advances researchers have made.

"The techniques and approaches used in the research can be applied to other areas such as biomaterials, bioengineering and life science," Ching said. "This new understanding on materials leads to better materials and devices that benefit lives for all people and the society in general."

Science magazine is published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and is the world's leading journal of original scientific research, global news and commentary.

$10 million in scholarships available

The University of Missouri has begun taking applications as result of a class-action lawsuit settlement.

The system agreed to set aside $10 million to settle claims that the UM System violated state law beginning in the 1990s by charging in-state tuition instead of providing free tuition to undergraduate students.

A total of 4,770 $500 scholarships are available for eligible applicants, their spouses and children. Officials said 104,000 current and former students may qualify for the scholarships.

Applicants must have attended the Rolla, Columbia, St. Louis or Kansas City campuses between January 1995 and August 2001 and have been older than 16 but younger than 22. The deadline to apply online is Feb. 17. Applications are available at: http://www.umsystem.edu.
