The UMKC men's basketball team had a busy holiday break, playing nine games in four weeks. The Kangaroos dropped six games and won three, which puts them at 3-1 in the Mid-Continent Conference and 8-7 overall.
The men started out with disappointment after a 75-71 loss at Penn State. UMKC dominated early on, putting up a 15-0 lead within the first eight-and-a-half minutes of the game.
The Nittany Lions' David Jackson put Penn State on the board with 11:22 left in the first half. Jackson made a three-point basket off an assist by teammate Ben Luber.
After an unanswered 16-point run by Penn State things stayed close until Dee Ayuba, junior, tied things up at 24-24 and then sank a jumper. The Roos led 28-26 going into the half.
UMKC continued to hold the lead throughout the majority of the second half. However, a good foul shot by the Nittany Lions' Jamelle Cornley tied things up at 48-48 with 9:53 left in the game.
The Kangaroos never regained the lead and lost the game 75-71.
Leading the team was Tim Blackwell, sophomore, with 21 points and six rebounds. Ayuba was close behind with 16 points and five rebounds. Red shirt freshman Brian Gettinger scored a career high of 15 points-all threes-while junior Quinton Day put up 14 points to go with eight assists and five rebounds.
Kyle Spears, junior, led in rebounds with seven.
The Kangaroos lost the next two games on the road: their Dec. 10 game against Northern Iowa, 87-64; and their Dec. 12 game against South Dakota State, 72-65.
Day was the top scorer in the Northern Iowa game with 27 points. Blackwell recorded 12 points, six assists and four rebounds. Leading in rebounds was Blake Crawford, junior, with seven; Ayuba had five.
