UMKC professor to receive Chinese award

UMKC law professor Patrick Randolph will receive a prestigious award from the Chinese government in honor of his work and contributions made to China.

Randolph is one of few in the scholastic field that has received this award; it more commonly is given to investors and those who have strengthened China's economy.

His contributions include teaching law to Chinese students, introducing scholarships for Chinese students to come to UMKC. Randolph also has had numerous Chinese students and visitors live with him in his home.

The award ceremony takes place Jan. 12 in Beijing.

Flu shots still available

As the temperature drops and it becomes harder to ward off disease, some may seek more effective defense than orange-flavored Vitamin C doses. Especially when it comes to avoiding the dreaded influenza.

The Student Health and Wellness Center still has 100 doses of the flu vaccination available for purchase. The cost is $15 for students and $18 for faculty.

The Center is located in Room 115 at 4825 Troost. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Respect for Chickens Day

Mayor Barnes recently called for Jan. 6 to be known as "Respect for Chickens Day." The decision was made in the wake of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals' "Kentucky Fried Cruelty" campaign.

This day is to be a monument to the remembrance of these delicious birds and the cruelty they are put through.

PETA hopes on this day people will boycott Kentucky Fried Chicken because of their inhumanity toward chickens.

Hope turned to horror

A Jan. 2 blast in West Virginia left 13 miners trapped and with depleting levels of oxygen. Most horrifying of all is the drastic miscommunication between sources and reporters. Several newspapers up and down the East Coast printed stories that claimed 12 had survived.

The news came as a relief to friends and family of those souls that had been trapped in the mine, but that relief soon faded when the real story came to light just hours after the papers hit the stands.
