Moments into the game Quinton Day, junior, set the tone by falling on his butt when going for a three-point shot. Of UMKC's 23 attempts on the basket made from three-point range, only three went in the hoop.
Just under six minutes into the game Kyle Spears, junior, sank a jumper to bring the score to 3-5. Despite an early lead, however, the Roos' play was not up to par.
The Roos lost their lead with 11:28 left in the game when University of Missouri's Thomas Gardner put up three foul shots off a foul on Brent Stephens, junior.
Two minutes went by before a foul by junior Blake Crawford sent the Tigers' Marshall Brown to the line. Brown made one of two, but Dee Ayuba, junior, came through for the Roos; he put in a two-point shot to tie things up at nine.
Fouls were a real problem for the Kangaroos; nobody on the court received less than two called against them.
With a three by MU's Jason Horton the Tigers regained the lead 13-9, with 7:04 left in the half. Despite a constant battle and consistent shooting at the line, UMKC was unable to ever bounce back. They were could not gain control of the game and entered the locker room with the score at 24-15.
A missed three by Brian Gettinger, freshman, gave indication of what was to come in the second half. A jumper by Ayuba in the first minute of play and a foul shot a moment later made the score 24-18.
Almost four-and-a-half minutes passed before a jumper by Ayuba brought the score to 33-20.
A lay-up by Crawford, a three pointer by Blackwell, a foul shot by Gettinger, and a lay-up by Day brought the score to 51-28.
Then Spears sank two jumpers, and Blackwell put in two from the line and a three-point shot off an assist by Ayuba.
Day completed a slam dunk to bring the score to 55-39.
Blackwell put in the last basket of the game with exactly one minute left in play.
