Roos win home opener

The UMKC women's basketball team lost to Wichita State on Tuesday night at the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kan.

The Kangaroos led at halftime, 33-30, but the Shockers outscored UMKC in the second half to get the win, 71-60.

Wichita State scored the first points of the game with a lay-up by Kiki Stephens, sophomore, but the Kangaroos answered right back with a jump shot by Sammi Knapic, senior, to tie the game up at two.

A three pointer 15 seconds later by the Shockers brought the score to 5-2. But a jumper by Jowan Ortega, junior, and two three pointers from Leigh Mead, junior, put UMKC ahead 10-5. The lead did not last long.

A three pointer and jump shot by Wichita State Lexee McDonnell, junior, tied the game up at 10.

The score was tied five more times over the next eight minutes, before the Kangaroos pulled ahead with a lay-up by Stephanie Brown, junior. A three pointer by Mead, a foul shot by Liz Obrecht, senior, and lay-ups by Heather Wimberly, freshman, and Brown gave UMKC eight of the next 14 points.

UMKC led at the half, 33-30.

Wichita State scored six straight points in the second-half opening to take a three point advantage, 36-33.

The game was tied for the 10th time at 40 all when the Shockers used a 14-4 run over next eight minutes to build a double digit advantage, 54-44.

The Kangaroos cut the advantage to five with five minutes of play left, but Wichita State used a 12-6 run in the final minutes of the game to build a 14-point lead before winning 71-60.

Mead led the team with 17 points on 6-of-11 field goals.

Knapic and junior Ortega both finished with 12 points. Obrecht had nine points. Knapic tied with Obrecht for the team lead with seven rebounds.



UMKC vs. Northwest Missouri State University



UMKC returned to action for their first home game of the season on Thursday night against Northwest Missouri State University at Swinney Recreation Center. A three pointer by Knapic served as the game-winner for the Kangaroos as they topped the Bearcats, 76-73.
