Roos win home opener

Northwest built an early advantage in the game; they went up by six points, 10-4, at 14:08. The Kangaroos then scored the next six points to tie the game at 10, but the Bearcats responded with 10 of the next 15 points, bringing the score to 20-15.

Two made foul shots by Obrecht and three pointer by Ortega tied the game up at 20 all. Scoring went back and forth over the next three minutes before tying back up at 26. UMKC outscored the Bearcats 15-12 to lead 41-38 at the half.

Northwest came out of the locker room and made their first three shots to retake the lead at 45-41.

A three pointer by Mead brought the score within one, but the Bearcats fired back with two jump shots to regain their four-point lead. UMKC tied the score at 50 and 56. Then three consecutive three pointers by Mead and Ortega gave the Kangaroos a nine-point lead.

The Bearcats did not give up. They took the lead at 71-70 with three minutes to play. Ortega then made one of two free throws to tie the game before she nailed a lay-up to put UMKC up by two.

Tobey Beer, freshman, fouled Northwest's Meghan Blay, senior, resulting in two made free throws. The game was 73 all.

With 1:39 remaining, Obrecht assisted Knapic in a three-point shot to give the Kangaroos the lead. Northwest had two opportunities to tie the game, but both attempts fell short. UMKC won 76-73.

Three Kangaroos players scored double figures for the night. Mead led the way with 21 points, which all came from three-point baskets. Ortega had 17 points, seven rebounds and a game-high seven assists.

Brown had her second career double-double with 10 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Obrecht had 12 boards to go with six points. Knapic had six points to go along with five assists, four rebounds and two steals.



UMKC vs. University of Arkansas



UMKC played the University of Arkansas Sunday at the Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville, Ark. The Kangaroos fell to the Lady Razorbacks 84-57.

Brown led the Kangaroos with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting and six rebounds in 31 minutes of play.

Alysa Klein, sophomore, added 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while Knapic had 11 points and four assists in 27 minutes.

UMKC is now 2-5 for the season.

The Kangaroos head to Lawrence, Kan. Wednesday night to face the Kansas Jayhawks. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. at the Allen Fieldhouse.
