Progress continues on the new University of Missouri-Kansas City information management system. PeopleSoft is being implemented as the fully integrated Web-based information management system for the University of Missouri (UM) System.

Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Mel Tyler sent out an e-mail Nov. 30 assuring UMKC the implementation process is well underway and will continue to integrate the student information system.

The decision to encompass the UM campuses under one system was made in 1997. The UM system purchased PeopleSoft in 1998 for approximately $40 million. Included in that figure was a huge discount given to the UM System.

According to Tyler, "our current [STAR] system has been in place 35 years." He said if the STAR system crashed the University could not obtain transcripts or input grades.

"[Formerly] our campus had a different system… [and] we were not there. The sister system did not offer more state-of-the-art technology," explained Tyler. "PeopleSoft puts the University Missouri campuses under one system and is more Web-based. It costs time and money to develop functionality. We have to be able to secure a [information] system within UMKC. "

Tyler believes the student body expects to attain a level of functionality and availability.

"Another problem with the sister system was the registration system being outdated," Tyler said. "Students want to have access from different locations. [PeopleSoft] will really allow us the functionality to do things pretty much online and seamless."

UMKC will not be the first system campus to administer PeopleSoft. The University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR) was the first to implement the recruitment and admittance modules, and have nearly completed the financial aid modules. UMR is also in the process of upgrading its version of PeopleSoft 8.0 to 8.9.

The UM System chose Rolla as the first campus to implement PeopleSoft because of its size. Rolla, the smallest campus in the System, became the model by which the UM System would learn.
