UMKC pre-med student Colby James McLain, freshman, died in a car crash last Monday near 59th and Ward Parkway.
McLain, 19, lived in the Cherry Street Residence Hall. He graduated from Blue Springs South High School in May 2005 and entered UMKC this fall. McLain was known for his academic talent and self-taught guitar playing.
The UMKC community joined McLain's family and friends in celebration of his life at a service last Saturday at Unity Temple on the Plaza.
Facebook.com, the online interface for students at UMKC and other colleges nationwide, has served recently as a way for friends to remember McLain. Fellow students posted comments on McLain's wall sharing their happiness at having known him and sorrow that he is gone.
Simi Nomani, senior, said she met Colby over the summer through several friends.
"From the moment I met him he was just so full of life," she said. "He was laughing and having a great time. He was one of those people you wanted to be around because he made you smile. Every single time I saw him he would come up to me and give me a hug and say hi."
Nomani remarked about his head full of curly hair, a trait she also shares.
"That was one thing I loved about him-his hair was all over the place," she said.
Matt Molinaro, sophomore, nursing, went to high school with McLain. He recalls spending time with McLain this past summer.
"He would always come over to my house during the summer and hang out every day," Molinaro said. "I'll never forget how many good times we had together. I can't even think of the best time; we had so many of them."
"He was just such an amazing person and it's such a loss for everybody, especially the people who didn't get to know him," Nomani said. "No words will ever do him justice. There were so many amazing things about him."
