As we near holiday break, the UMKC Provost Search Committee continues to accept and review applications from candidates hoping to become UMKC's new provost.

The provost serves as UMKC's Chief Academic Officer. He or she oversees the separate schools of the University, as well as student affairs, research, faculty affairs and academic planning. This comprehensive position requires a leader with a great deal of experience and many talents.

Since August 2005, Dr. Bruce Bubacz, Curators' Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Law, has served as interim provost. He stepped up following the departure of Dr. Bill Osborne, who left to become the College of Engineering dean at Southern Illinois University. Osborne served as provost after being appointed interim provost two years prior by then-Chancellor Martha Gilliland.

On Sept. 2, Interim Chancellor Dr. Steve Lehmkuhle announced the formation of the UMKC Provost Search Committee. The 19-member committee, representative of the school's units, administration and students, is currently searching the candidate pool for eligible applicants.

Incoming Chancellor Dr. Guy Bailey, who begins his role next semester, will review the final candidates chosen by the committee. He will make the ultimate decision on UMKC's next provost.

The position profile published by Heidrick & Struggles, the consulting firm hired by UMKC to aid in the provost search, provides information about UMKC and outlines the qualities of the ideal provost. Qualities sought include a "flexible and innovative approach to changing contexts in research universities."

UMKC currently faces plenty of change. Total enrollment for the fall 2005 semester was 14,310, the largest semester total to date.

As the student population increases and diversifies, so do the duties of the provost.

The Office of the Provost currently manages many initiatives, including FaCET, the Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching, and SEARCH, which encourages students to pair with faculty to conduct research.

Interim Provost Bubacz said earlier this year, "Wherever our graduates go, it is my goal they have in mind the qualities that shape responsible community members."

As of Nov. 18, the committee continues to review applications. The committee's ads posted in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Black Issues and Hispanic Outlook have already triggered many responses from the national community of educators.

The committee recently published a Web site to keep the UMKC community informed about the search. For updates, the provost position description and more information, visit http://www.umkc.edu/provost/committees/provostsearch/searchcommittee.asp.
