Congressmen Dennis Moore (Third District-Kansas), shown speaking, and Emanuel Cleaver II (Fifth District-Missouri), far left, held a news conference with UMKC students last Tuesday in Pierson Auditorium. (Interim Chancellor Stephen Lehmkuhle shown center). Both politicians condemned the recently proposed higher education cut which could potentially decrease student loan aid by more than $14 billion, increasing costs for thousands of student borrowers in Kansas and Missouri. The bill represents the largest proposed cut in the student financial aid's history.
Cleaver said tuition hikes were not the answer.
"If there is a time in history for our nation not to raise tuition, it would be right now," said Cleaver. "I think it is recklessness at its highest level. The current government ought to be embarrassed." -Jennifer Bhargava
