Interim Chancellor Stephen Lehmkuhle discussed former dean Dr. Bryan Le Beau's actions with the Arts and Sciences Student Council. The discussion took place at the Nov. 15 meeting.
Dr. Le Beau plagiarized a speech given at a commencement. He was put on administrative leave until Dec. 31, 2005 with a reduced salary while a committee decided his future as dean.
"We do know there's a fair amount of a speech...used by Bryan Le Beau that wasn't referenced. That's a fact," Lehmkuhle said. "I felt committed that I had to let some time pass and look at it."
Secretary Ashley French summed up the council's feelings when she said, "If the University keeps him on then they are saying [plagiarism] is okay."
A Dec. 2 e-mail notified everyone that Le Beau was no longer seeking reinstatement as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Incoming Chancellor Guy Bailey will handle the search for a new dean.
The council unanimously passed Resolution 2005:1 which was seeking University News Publications Board documents to be provided to the Kansas City Aurora, an independent newspaper. The Appropriations Guidelines were also approved unanimously. Organizations seeking funding will be denied if representatives do not appear at the meeting their application is reviewed at.
Much of what was discussed at the Nov. 15 meeting was also the subject of last Tuesday's meeting. The only difference was a few missing council members due to the UMKC vs. MU basketball game in Columbia. The council didn't have quorum, so no appropriations were approved and nothing was voted on.
Arts and Sciences Council President Sarah Peters is seeking input from council members on next semester's meeting day. She went back to the drawing board because the schedule she made out is not compatible for everyone. Peters also wants to change how the council obtains office keys. The Student Life Office recently took over checking out the keys to the council. Peters would prefer if they had more control over the keys.
