Walt Bodine: a long life of journalism

Some consider Walt Bodine a journalism legend. Many recognize Bodine from his show heard on 89.3 KCUR, but that is just one aspect of his long-lasting career. Bodine has been a regular in the journalism business for nearly 60 years. He has worked for news stations such as Fox 4 and Channel 9, as well as various radio stations.

Governor Nixon promotes Caring for Missourians

UMKC will directly benefit from a new initiative to address the shortage of health care professionals in Missouri. Gov. Jay Nixon visited the Hospital Hill Campus last Thursday to announce that UMKC is one of the many colleges and universities across the state which will be part of the Caring for Missourians program, an initiative to train more than 900 health care professionals to serve in critical-need areas.

Students push for radio station of their own

Plans are in the works for a new student-run radio station run through KCUR. Student Sarah Troyer took on the idea of the new radio station as her final project for a class with Patty Cahill, general manager of KCUR. The vision of the radio station was originally born in basketball player Brian Goettinger who graduated this year.

SIFE celebrates accomplishments

The UMKC Students in Free Enterprises (SIFE) team had much to celebrate at their year-end gathering on April 28. The team brought home a first-place finish at the Dallas Regional in April. SIFE is a multidisciplinary campus organization that allows students to utilize personal knowledge to create projects that improve their local communities.

Health Sciences reach out

Hospital Hill will soon be bustling with high school and college undergraduate students with dreams of entering the medical field. The UMKC Health Sciences departments offer summer programs that reach out to young people in this community, as well as neighboring communities, getting them one step closer to those dreams.
