So now our Provost, Dr. Gail Hackett, may be leaving after a mere 10 months on the job. Does this mean the search firm has to give us back the money it charged? It's highly unlikely. When I heard she had announced Nov. 25 she was one of two finalists to become provost of Texas Tech (where UMKC ex-Chancellor Dr. Guy Bailey transferred this summer), I was sorely tempted to pen a rant on the subject.
Each year on Dec. 1, communities around the world are united for one cause: World AIDS Day. People gather to remember friends and family who have been lost, to reflect on how far we have come and to remind others about how far we still have yet to go. The symbol of this quest is a single red ribbon - a solitary reminder of so much death and pain, but, most importantly, hope for a cure.
On Nov. 14, the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Executive Committee voted in favor of a moratorium on all admissions to the Social Science Consortium co-discipline. This action is unprecedented both in scope and timing and was brought to the Committee without due process.
