The exhibit, entitled "Hungry Planet: What the World Eats," brings together 15 families from 12 diverse nations across the globe. Photographs by Peter Menzel combine images, narratives and even grocery lists to document their weekly diets and food environments.
Last month's Big Man on Campus (BMOC) competition, a charitable male "beauty" pageant hosted by UMKC's Delta Zeta sorority chapter, brought some interesting students to the spotlight - including the event's overall winner, Jag Beveridge. A 22-year-old senior and Finance major, Beveridge competed against seven contestants of various fraternities in categories showcasing beach wear, formal wear and individual talent.
Local leaders discussed Kansas City light rail and combined sewer plans last Wednesday at UMKC. Presentations were given about each subject followed by a debate and question-and-answer session with a panel made up of leaders and proponents of both plans.
The trip to an Obama rally last Thursday proved to be a test of patience and luck for many area students. Many great challenges arose Thursday when the Barack Obama campaign took students from all over Kansas City, including many from UMKC, to a rally at the Carnahan Quadrangle at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo.
With hopes of expanding general knowledge about environmental efforts on campus, Clean Commute hosted a Five Green Things event Wednesday. Clean Commute is a campus-based group, organized by the local environmental group Bridging the Gap, that aims to reduce carbon emissions through the use of public transit, car pooling and bike riding.
The 30-year-old Oak Street Parking Structure is at the center of a heated sustainability versus practicality debate. The debate has been escalating round-by-round since the beginning of the semester as to whether the university should increase parking spaces or become a more pedestrian campus.
Changes for research program After receiving John Baumann's resignation as vice provost for Research, UMKC appointed Dr. William Morgan as interim vice provost. Morgan, Professor Emeritus, School of Biological Sciences, assumed his new duties Nov. 1.
Oct. 24 9:21 a.m. Illness - A student fainted while standing in line in the University Center. When officers arrived, she was conscious but was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures. 9:47 a.m. Larceny - Two Missouri license plates were stolen off of a vehicle parked in the General Services Building parking lot.
