Christmas came early for five area homeowners when UMKC students, staff and faculty joined together last weekend to reach out to the community with their first Christmas in October event. The past four months have been devoted to preparing for this community service project.
The anti-war group Kansas City Iraq Task Force and the K.C. branch of the American Friends Service Committee organized an interesting evening of film and debate last Wednesday at UMKC. A panel of three experienced media newshounds, Peter Morello of UMKC, Matthew Schofield of The Kansas City Star and activist Mike Murphy led a discussion after the screening of journalist/activist Amy Goodman's "Independent Media in Time of War.
Visual ailments once difficult to treat have now met their match thanks to the pioneering work of one of UMKC's esteemed medical researchers. Dr. Ashim K. Mitra, Ph.D., the University of Missouri Curators' Professor of Pharmacy and chairman of UMKC's division of Pharmaceutical Sciences, recently developed a number of new ways to heal the human eye, replacing the former technological front-runners with more efficient and less painful treatments.
Veterans gathered on campus Wednesday at an event hosted by the MindBody Connection intended to promote awareness of veteran opportunities. Topics covered included transitional assistance and educational benefits. Representatives from the Kansas City Veterans Center, the Veteran's Administration (VA) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), attended the event.

On Oct. 10, UMKC hosted the second annual African American and Latino (AALo) Empowerment Summit for Men of Color to address the needs of minorities on campus . Organized by the Division of Diversity, Access and Equity, the summit was first established in 2007 to improve the personal, academic and social experiences of men of color within the faculty and student bodies.
UMKC student Layna Dugan made her national television debut Friday on "Deal Or No Deal" taking home $27,000 at the end of the night. "It was definitely exciting," Dugan said. "When you think about possibly winning one million it's hard to settle for anything else.
A fan of science and secretly a master speller, Professor Richard David Murphy is a teacher worth learning more about. Murphy, professor of Physics, was recently recognized for his accomplishments and teaching style receiving the 2008 Arts and Sciences Alumni Good Teaching Award.
