Massive UMKC turnout for 'Tulips on Troost'

Last Saturday, UMKC students, staff, faculty and members of the community made their way to Troost Avenue by the busloads … literally. While many students were sleeping in on Saturday morning, more than 600 dedicated volunteers gathered at the University Playhouse meeting point (pictured above) at sunrise to participate in the Tulips on Troost Community Service Day.

UMKC students to get new student IDs next semester

UMKC students are set to get new student ID cards at the beginning of next semester. All features from the old card will remain the same with the biggest difference between the current and incoming cards being the inclusion of "Roo Bucks." This enables students to put money on their card and spend it at different university facilities like dining and laundry services, the bookstore and copy machines.

Campus activist opens up about study abroad

UMKC Urban Studies student Darren Bohrer has a lot to say around campus. A campus leader in his own right, he has also spent time out of the country giving him additional insight in our ever-expanding worldview. Bohrer spent the last spring semester studying European Municipal Policy in the Czech Republic at Masaryk University, the country's second largest university.

'Speak Out' lets voices be heard

Speak Out, an event organized by the Kansas City chapter of Out & Equal, came to Pierson Auditorium last Monday, opening up discussions about sexual discrimination. The event was an opportunity for members of the organization and the audience to come together and discuss discrimination in the work place experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in the Kansas City area.

Students and staff flip first earth at site of new union

Fourteen gold-painted shovels were put to use Friday afternoon at the corner of 51st and Cherry streets marking the ceremonial groundbreaking for the university's New Student Union. Leo Morton, Interim Chancellor, Mel Tyler, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management and Provost Gail Hackett were among the administrators who participated in the ceremony.

Political Corner - Residents to vote on official language

Missouri voters are considering some controversial constitutional amendments this election season including an amendment that will make English the official language of the government. The initiative asks: "Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to add a statement that English shall be the language of all governmental meetings at which any public business is discussed, decided, or public policy is formulated whether conducted in person or by communication equipment including conference calls, video conferences, Internet chat or message board?" State Representative Brian Nieves, of Missouri's 98th district, sponsored the measure.

Residence halls go green

With green initiatives sprouting up across campus, UMKC's residence halls are following suit. Beginning this semester, Oak and Cherry Street Residence Halls have recycling containers in every room. After receiving many inquiries from student residents about making recycling a possibility, the department of Residential Life worked over the summer to gather funding and put together a plan of implementation, Eric Grospitch, director of Residential Life, said.

Enrollment goes up After setting a goal of a 3 percent increase in enrollment for the fall semester, UMKC has exceeded that mark with an increase of 3.9 percent. Students are taking an average of 12 to 15 credit hours, a 4.5 percent increase. First time freshman enrollment increased by 5 percent to 1,007 students.
