I'm worried about crime near this campus. New this semester to UMKC and living in the dorms, for the most part, my experience has been exactly what I expected. But the countless orientation programs, campus tours, brochures and mailed advertisements (to which I have been relentlessly exposed over the past eight months) seem to have omitted one particular - the local crime rate.
In today's world, it's virtually necessary to obtain a college degree. This is a societal norm the vast majority of us obviously believe, as we're wiling away thousands of dollars here at UMKC. Is it really true? Probably so. We amass endless knowledge from our various degree programs, but I wonder exactly what we're learning.
(Full disclosure: I live at the Oak Place apartments in a 4 bedroom apartment, which is cheaper than Oak Street.) We live in a society that, now more than ever in this election season, prides itself on democracy. Democracy is a wonderful ideology, the idea that everyone's voice will be heard.
