UMKC students craving human interaction, athletic competition and/or some relief from academic stress have a possible outlet through Swinney Recreation Center (SRC) this fall. Beginning with men and women's flag football season Sept. 6, UMKC Campus Recreation and Intramurals will kick off its 2008 season.
The Roos had a slow start to the weekend, but ended on a happy note. UMKC traveled to Fort Worth, Texas, to participate in the Texas Christian University (TCU) Molten/Nike Invitational Friday and Saturday evenings. While the Roos dropped the first two matches - one against Belmont University (BU) [(23-25), (21-25), (17-25)] and another against the tournament host TCU [(16-25), (17-25), (19-25)] - the Roos came back to win the game against Louisiana Tech University (LTU) [(25-22), (25-18), (25-22)].
With over 1,700 courses across the country, disc golf is transforming itself from the best kept secret to the next up-and-coming sport. Nine courses are located in the Kansas City metro area alone, with four courses on the Kansas side and five in Missouri, making it something of a Mecca for disc golf enthusiasts.

The Kangaroos bounded into the Windy City Friday night and all but tempered the vaunted Flames of the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) in a 2-2 draw. The match was UMKC's first ever season opener against a ranked opponent. UIC was ranked 16th in the nation, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
A couple late second-half goals victimized the UMKC men's soccer team, which suffered its first season loss, a 3-2 setback to the University of Eastern Illinois (EIU) on Sunday in Charleston, Ill. After the match, Roo Head Coach Rick Benben was forthright about his team's performance.
Brett Ferguson is only 5'7", but he never paid attention to what people said. He refused to give up on being a collegiate athlete. "With my height, size and lack of experience, I was told that I would not be able to play college volleyball," said new Roo volleyball volunteer assistant coach Ferguson.
Harkins shines in Lawrence UMKC sophomore Alex Harkins placed third for the Roos at the Bob Timmons Invitational Saturday, Aug. 30, in Lawrence, Kan. Harkins' time of 19:24.2 in the Women's 5K run beat out her closest competitor by 0.8 seconds. Running unattached, UMKC distance runner Sara Hiller finished in ninth place with a time of 19:53.9.
