Change in plans with SRC renovations

Plans for the $1.9 million renovation at Swinney Recreation Center (SRC) have been revised amid a number of concerns raised by SRC patrons. UMKC faculty, community patrons of the facility and individuals from the university student body expressed displeasure over a previous floor plan for the SRC renovation and its locker room designs.

Audit violates privacy, under investigation

What was meant to be an audit of student activity funding procedures may have violated federal privacy law. DaRon McGee, Student Government Association (SGA) comptroller, initiated an audit of Student Activity Fee Committee (SAFC) funding allocation. In the process, student ID numbers were made public.

PSA celebrates spring in the U.S.

It has been spring in Pakistan for a few months now, but the Pakistani Student Association (PSA) rang in spring at UMKC with the annual Basant Mela celebration on April 16 in the Quad. According to PSA Vice President Mehreen Khawaja, senior, biology, the festival is all about celebrating the start of spring.

Though they previously confirmed, according to Arts and Sciences (A&S) Student Council President Klassie Alcine, the College Republicans did not attend the debate.

UMKC vigil marks one year anniversary of Virginia Tech shooting

A year after the Virginia Tech shootings, students gathered miles away in memory of those who lost their lives. UMKC students came together Wednesday night in the Oak Street Residence Hall courtyard and held a candlelight vigil for the students of Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University (NIU).

Royals-themed lunch in the cafeteria

Royall Hall wasn't named after the baseball team, but last Tuesday afternoon in the University Center, the dining hall could've been renamed Royal Cafeteria. The cafeteria turned into Royals central with ball park food, Royals raffles and free Royals merchandise.

UMKC SIFE wins regionals

UMKC's Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) walked away from their March 31 regional competition with first place, according to a SIFE press release. About 30 colleges from the region attended the competition. "This win is huge for both the team and UMKC," said Johnnie Weathersby III, SIFE president, in an e-mail.

UMKC graduate carries Olympic torch Marwa Younis, a December 2008 UMKC graduate (and former U-News staff writer), carried the Olympic torch on April 14 in Muscat, Oman. She said the experience was "amazing" and one she would never forget. "The streets were full of life and spirit, everything came alive," Younis said.
