Foundation gives $5 million to build new soccer stadium

Raymond F. Beagle, Jr. and Charles J. Egan, trustees of the Stanley H. Durwood Foundation, pledged $5 million to UMKC on what was already a bright Wednesday morning. A press conference inside Swinney Recreation Center announced the donation, which will be put toward the construction of a proposed $9 million soccer complex.

New KCMO School Board member speaks at UMKC

Fresh off an election victory as member of the Kansas City, Missouri (KCMO) School Board, Airick West came to UMKC Wednesday afternoon to speak at the Honor's Program colloquium in Cockefair Hall. He spoke about links between poverty and education. He began by giving his definition of poverty.

Stolen flat-panel TVs to be replaced

Over spring break three flat-panel televisions were stolen from the University Center, and now UMKC is trying to replace them. Between 5 p.m. March 22 and 8 a.m. March 24, the three flat-panel televisions that surrounded Freshën's Smoothie Company in the University Center cafeteria went missing.

The People's Party dominates SGA elections

With more than 50 percent of the vote for the top two positions, Bridgett Johnson and DaRon McGee led their ticket to a clean sweep of the positions on the new Student Government Association (SGA) Executive Board for 2008-09. Johnson and McGee, elected president and executive vice president respectively, will be joined by the other two members of the People's Party: Moving UMKC Forward ticket.

Student Union town hall addresses new budget

After a $7.1 million reduction in budget, the Student Union planning committee held a town hall meeting last Wednesday to present students with information about the new union, hear suggestions and answer questions. As the University News reported on April 7, the University of Missouri System (UM) Board of Curators met April 4 and approved a revised lower cost for the new union.

It's O-Kaye to be Green

Kaye Johnston's life seems to revolve around environmental issues. She is UMKC's coordinator for solid waste and recycling and a geosciences major. "I coordinate recycling and waste reduction activities," Johnston said. "That includes the overviews of our waste contracts and recycling contracts and making sure we can handle all the waste in the most efficient manner on campus.

A community of philosophy lovers

Since the foundation of the philosophy department at UMKC, the faculty members have established a group to encourage student interactions within the major. The purpose of the Philosophy Circle is to create a forum by which adjunct lectures can be given, as well as to establish interaction between both professors and students.

An unusual board meeting

In the normally austere setting of the Administrative Center, guests entering the Brookside Room could watch (and join in with) administrators learning how to dance the hula. UMKC's Communiversity, which offers workshops and classes for the campus and surrounding community on just about any topic imaginable, was presenting its annual report.

April 4 8:08 a.m. Traffic Warrant - During a traffic stop at 53rd and Charlotte streets, officers arrested a suspect who had warrants out for her arrest. 11:17 a.m. Traffic Arrest - During a traffic stop at 57th Street and Troost Avenue, officers arrested a suspect who had warrants out for his arrest.
