Ben Folds rocks Swinney

Ben Folds is a world-renowned singer, songwriter, pianist and rock star, but he seemed more like a friend giving a concert Saturday night - a very talented friend with a lot of money. UMKC and Rockhurst University students who attended the Ben Folds concert April 5 at UMKC's Swinney Recreation Center experienced a diverse night of music.

Curators raise tuition and fees, but not student representation

The University of Missouri System (UM) Board of Curators approved a 4.1 percent increase in tuition and most fees at its meeting on April 5 in Rolla. The raise in rates is based on the increase of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and is effective beginning with the 2008 summer session.

If you ever wanted to go back and listen to your lectures before quizzes, tests or finals, now you can with a podcasting system offered by UMKC. Last fall, a podcasting committee of more than 15 professors came together to set up a system for students that will allow them to revisit lectures throughout the year.

ASCEND unites Christian organizations

Eight Christian organizations gathered last Thursday in Pierson Auditorium with two purposes: to unite and glorify God together. Campus Crusade for Christ, Gospel Choir Ministry, Focus, Gamma Alpha Lambda (GAL), Luke 4:18, University Bible Fellowship, The Next Level (TNL) and Impact Ministries all sent representatives to the event who gave two to three minute explanations of their purpose.

I?t's Thai box, not tae box

A crew of students learned to punch, kick and defend while staying in shape last Wednesday night. Swinney Recreation Center held a free demo class for its new Thai Box program. Thai Box is a contact sport, and participants direct their punches and kicks at each other.

Community Service Day 2008

UMKC students and Greek organizations helped clean up areas around Kansas City as UMKC had its biannual Community Service Day. Students picked up trash, pulled weeds, trimmed bushes and even pulled down dead trees (pictured above) at and around Town Fork Creek Greenway.

Bloch dean leaves UMKC Dean O. Homer Erekson left his position as Dean of the Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration to accept a position as dean of the Neely School of Business at Texas Christian University. Erekson was at UMKC for six years.

People's Party: moving UMKC forward

Bridgett Johnson, the People's Party candidate for president of the Student Government Association (SGA), wants to make the SGA more relevant to UMKC's students. A junior political science major, Johnson said the People's Party would work hard to reach and involve people unaware of what SGA does.
