Saturday afternoon, the UMKC women's basketball team came to Tulsa, Okla. with one mission in mind. The Kangaroo women and their coaching staff seemed bound and determined to take the first step toward a Summit League Championship. Felonious Intent When the UMKC Kangaroos men took the court Saturday night they expected a battle with the IUPUI Jaguars. What started as a fair competition between two fierce competitors, by game's end turned out to be larceny in its rawest form. Forwards James Humphrey and Spencer Johnson and guards Nathan Balch and Reggie Hamilton, freshman all, may have only played one season together, but are already forming a brotherhood. Growing up in a small town and attending an even smaller school was never much of a concern for UMKC junior forward Dane Brumagin. The place he calls home is Montgomery City, a town located in the heart of Missouri just 40 miles east of Columbia. T?he UMKC women's basketball team came out for its final regular season game of the year last Monday, and for the five seniors, it was the final home game of their careers. The Kangaroos stayed in it, down only six points with nearly seven minutes left in the opening stanza, but the Mastodons went on a 19-10 scoring run to close out the half.
In a game that few of the throng of UMKC fans felt should have ended as it did, the Kangaroos fell in bitter defeat at the hands of the IUPUI Jaguars 69-65 … or so it seemed. On Saturday afternoon in the first round of the Summit League Tournament, UMKC, the seventh seed, faced IUPUI, the second seed, at the John Q.
Track and field was all newly-appointed UMKC track and field head coach Shameika McField knew growing up. So when Athletics Director Tim Hall hired her in the fall to work as the program's full-time Academic Advisor, she welcomed the break. It didn't last long.
UMKC softball took one step forward and a couple back over the weekend at the Shocker Invitational hosted by Wichita State University in Wichita, Kan.
